Teacher Unions Demand Payment of Arrears and Laptops or Face Withdrawal of Services

Ghana’s pre-tertiary teacher unions have issued a three-week request to the government, demanding payment of 12 months’ arrears on pensions and the distribution of laptops to teachers.

The unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), have warned that they will withdraw their services if their demands are not met by September 16.

The union leadership, led by GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah Tanko, also raised concerns about issues related to service conditions.

Tanko emphasized that the Education Minister must initiate negotiations on the deprived area allowance within one month of signing the collective agreement.

Additionally, the unions call for timely resolution of promotions and corrections in salary disparities.

Tanko also criticized the delays in paying second-tier pension contributions and highlighted ongoing issues with the Public Services Commission’s handling of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

He urged the government to address these issues promptly.

“If we do not receive a favourable response by the close of Monday, September 16, 2024, we shall determine the next line of action,” Tanko stated, pressing for swift government action to address the teachers’ grievances.
