The chairman of the Ghana Constitutional Review Committee, Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh has insisted that there is no need for government to sponsor private individuals’ religious pilgrimages.
He is of the view that the taxpayer’s money in Ghana must never be used to subsidize the practice of one’s faith.
The learned Executive Director of Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) made this known in a post shared via social media.
He explained, “Principle. Same yesterday, same today. The Government of Ghana must get out of the sponsorship of private religious pilgrimage business, whether it is a pilgrimage to Mecca or, as happened one time (or more), to Israel.
Emphasizing that “Taxpayer money must not be applied to subsidise the practice of one’s private faith. Enjoy your Sunday”.
Meanwhile, Interim Hajj Taskforce has announced a reduction in Hajj fares from GH¢75,000 to GH¢62,000, equivalent to $4,130 at an exchange rate of GH¢15 to a dollar.
This is a subsidy in fulfilment of government’s promise during the campaign season in 2024.
