Supreme Court quashes Tamale High Court ruling, restores Nyindam as Kpandai MP

The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the long-running Kpandai parliamentary dispute, quashing the Tamale High Court’s earlier annulment of the election. The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, was passed by a 4-1 majority.

Under the ruling, Matthew Nyindam, the NPP Member of Parliament for Kpandai, will be reinstated in Parliament. Nyindam and his legal team are required to serve the judgment on the legislature to complete his return to office.

The decision overturns the High Court’s earlier judgment, which had nullified Nyindam’s election following a petition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal.

The High Court had subsequently ordered a rerun, which was scheduled for December 31, 2025, but was stayed when Nyindam approached the Supreme Court to invoke its supervisory jurisdiction.

Prior to the ruling, NDC Deputy Director of Elections, Tanko Rashid-Computer, had expressed confidence in his party’s chances. Speaking to journalists at the Supreme Court, he said, “We are winning. We are winning. We are going to win.” He repeated his assurance, adding simply, “Yes.”

Following the Supreme Court’s verdict, the NDC must now accept the final outcome. The decision marks the end of a months-long legal battle over the parliamentary seat in Kpandai, which has been closely watched as a test of Ghana’s electoral and judicial processes.

Matthew Nyindam, through his legal representatives, is now expected to take steps to reinstate himself officially in Parliament.
