Name it after the builder, not the betrayer – A Plus on Kotoka Airport proposal

Gomoa Central MP, Hon. Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has weighed in on the government’s proposed renaming of the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.

A Plus argued that the airport should be named after the man who built it; Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

“If the airport must be named after a person, then it must be named after the man who built it, not the man who betrayed him. That man is Kwame Nkrumah,” he said in a post on Facebook sighted by MyNewsGh

He highlighted Nkrumah’s role between 1956 and 1958 in transforming a former British Royal Air Force base into a modern civilian international airport.

“Nkrumah did it not for vanity. He did it because he believed Ghana would be a gateway to Africa, confident, industrial, and sovereign. That airport was part of a larger dream: factories working, skills developing, dignity through labour, and Ghana leading Africa with purpose,” A Plus explained.

The MP emphasized that recognizing Nkrumah’s work is about celebrating vision and national development.

“To then name the very airport Nkrumah built after the man who overthrew him is not only wrong, it is cruel.

“It is illogical. You do not erase the builder and glorify the destroyer. You do not honour interruption over vision,” he said.
