Bawumia won places he didn’t win before – Paul Adom-Otchere

Good Evening Ghana host, Paul Adom-Otchere, has observed that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did well rather than decline regarding the just-ended NPP primaries.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, Adom-Otchere said his initial expectations were shaped by Dr Bawumia’s earlier performance, particularly the strong percentage secured in previous contests.

He admitted that he was watching closely to see whether that benchmark would be matched.

“I was really hoping that Dr Bawumia would repeat the 60% he achieved previously,” he said.

“But when I looked at the results, I noticed that he had won places that he didn’t win before. And it is always important how the party sees him.”

According to Adom-Otchere, the headline figures did not fully capture what was happening beneath the surface.

He explained that electoral strength is not only about raw percentages but also about geographic reach and voter spread, especially in key strongholds.

“In Ashanti, which is what I was interested in, it looked like the spread was wider,” he observed. “The longitude didn’t go up, but it spread.”

For him, that pattern signalled progress rather than stagnation, particularly in regions traditionally critical to the party’s fortunes.

He suggested that such expansion could prove significant in shaping internal party confidence and future strategy.

“When I saw that, I thought, well, that’s not too bad,” Adom-Otchere added.
