Why we have stopped our women from travelling to Burkina Faso – GNTTTA Chairman

The Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association, GNTTTA, has suspended travel to Burkina Faso and announced sanctions against members who attempt to import tomatoes during the pause.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, the National Chairman of the association, Eric Osei Tuffuor, said the decision was taken as the group assesses recent developments.

“Currently, we have halted women from traveling, and anyone who attempts to import tomatoes starting tomorrow will face sanctions,” he stated.

“We have also suspended all travels to Burkina Faso as we need to assess the situation and understand what has transpired.”

Tuffuor acknowledged the risks associated with the trade, noting that traders often operate under difficult conditions.

“Our job can be risky, and sometimes we survive bomb blasts. However, we cannot delay for too long, we must continue importing tomatoes, or it will negatively impact the country,” he said.

He explained that Ghana’s reliance on imports is largely due to seasonal shortages.

“In Ghana, we face a shortage of tomatoes, as they are seasonal. Therefore, imports from Burkina Faso are essential,” he added.

According to the chairman, discussions with government officials are ongoing to determine the next steps.

“We are still in discussions with the government and plan to conclude our meeting today,” Tuffuor said.
