Ghana moves to international arbitration over maritime dispute with Togo

The Government of Ghana has officially informed Togo that it will resolve the two countries’ maritime boundary dispute through international arbitration under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

In a statement, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the President, said, “This step follows eight years of negotiations that have not produced an agreed outcome.

“We are taking this measure to avoid escalation and to promote an amicable resolution.”

He added, “Our aim is to maintain good relations between Ghana and Togo while ensuring that tensions between our institutions do not worsen.” The government emphasized that the move is a peaceful and responsible approach to settling the dispute.
