The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has completed a thorough review of mixed drinks that combine alcohol with stimulants like caffeine, inositol, glucuronolactone, ginseng, and guarana.
The assessment considered both international and regional experiences, where several countries have restricted, suspended, or outright banned alcoholic energy drinks over public health concerns.
Dr. Josephine Akoto, speaking on the findings, said, “Our post-registration review focused on the safety and regulatory compliance of these products in Ghana.
“We looked closely at how these drinks could affect consumers, particularly young people, and compared our findings with global precedents.”
The review was conducted under Sections 81 and 82(a) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which grants the FDA authority to enforce safety standards that protect public health.
Dr. Akoto emphasized that “growing scientific evidence links the combination of depressants and stimulants to increased health risks, including heart complications, impaired judgment, and higher likelihood of accidents.”
