I made a political commitment – Afenyo-Markin reacts to Ken Ofori-Atta saga

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has clarified his role in the controversy surrounding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews, he admitted that he gave a political assurance regarding Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana.

“Yes, I made a political commitment, and I’m not running away from it,” he said.

According to him, Ofori-Atta had presented a medical report and requested time to complete a medical procedure abroad. Afenyo-Markin said he conveyed this at the political level.

“That was the representation I made,” he explained.

However, matters escalated when Ofori-Atta was later declared a fugitive. At that point, the Minority Leader said the case shifted from political engagement to a strictly legal process.

“Once the lawyers took over, it ended there for me,” he said. “The matter became purely legal.”

Addressing claims that the situation could hurt his party, he argued that public commentary has not always been fair.

“We want rule of law and fair hearing, but we are quick to pronounce people guilty,” he added.
