We must not crucify people – Afenyo-Markin reacts to parliament showdown

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says politics must not descend into public humiliation, especially when legal processes are ongoing.

During his appearance on Newsfile on JoyNews, he expressed disappointment over the display of Ken Ofori-Atta’s image in Parliament during heated exchanges.

“Ken also has a family,” he said. “His brother texted me and asked, ‘Leader, why are they doing this to my brother?’ I became emotional.”

He insisted he is not standing in the way of accountability but disagrees with what he described as attempts to “crucify” individuals before trial.

“I’m not a perfect guy, but I’ve been measured,” he stated.

On the matter involving Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Afenyo-Markin said his strong reaction was about protecting institutions, not defending personalities.

“People should look at my reaction in the broader context of upholding rule of law and ensuring institutional independence,” he explained.

He argued that delays in handling related constitutional matters give the impression that justice is not being expedited.

“The judiciary appears not to be in a hurry to dispense justice,” he said. “That is most unfair considering the gravity of the matter.”
