Lebanon update: Four Ghanaian soldiers recovering, one stable after surgery

Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Gyamfi, has provided an update on the condition of Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

“Four soldiers who sustained minor injuries are stable and recovering well,” he said.

“One soldier, who suffered serious injuries to both legs and the hip, was successfully evacuated to Beirut where he underwent surgery this morning. He is now stable and recuperating.”

The Minister added that fifteen officers lost all personal effects in a fire outbreak at their accommodation.

Ghana has formally lodged a complaint at UN Headquarters, emphasizing that parties in conflict must respect the safety of peacekeepers.

“We acknowledge the solidarity expressed by France,” he said. “Hon. Mrs. Alice Rufo, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, reached out to convey support.

She indicated that France has also raised concerns at the UN, as their peacekeepers are deployed in Lebanon.”

“Ghana deeply appreciates this gesture and reiterates that all possible measures are being taken to protect our troops serving under the UN flag.”
