People who fund campaigns are often hidden – Oliver Barker-Vormawor comments on political financing

Constitutional and Strategy Advisor for pressure group Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has described proposals to reform campaign financing in Ghana as a positive step.

Speaking on The Law on JoyNews on Sunday, March 8, he said the recommendations in the Constitutional Review Committee report on campaign financing deserve attention.

“CRC report seeking to reform our campaign finances is commendable,” he said.

According to him, a key problem in Ghana’s political system is the lack of transparency around those who finance election campaigns.

“One of the biggest challenges in our politics is that the people who fund campaigns are often hidden from the public,” he said.

He added that undisclosed donors sometimes influence government decisions after elections.

“You have situations where unseen people donate funds to candidates, and when those candidates win the polls, those same individuals are rewarded with sole-sourced contracts,” he said.

Barker-Vormawor said the situation can affect how public procurement decisions are made.

“That breeds corruption and leads to a loss of state funds because procurement decisions are no longer made in the national interest,” he added.
