Political independence is not enough – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has linked Ghana’s independence story to its upcoming push for reparations at the United Nations.

Reflecting on Ghana’s 69th Independence Day, he recalled the vision of Kwame Nkrumah, who argued that freedom must go beyond political sovereignty.

“Political independence without transforming global systems remains incomplete,” Mahama said.

He explained that Ghana’s decision to lead the conversation on reparations is rooted in that same philosophy, focusing on fairness in global economic and social structures.

Mahama added that the process being proposed is based on partnership, bringing together governments, institutions, and communities. “It is about strengthening justice, dignity, and shared progress,” he noted.

By this posture, the Mahama positioned the UN resolution as part of a broader effort to address inequality and create a more balanced international system.
