Ghanaians must scrutinize 81 sole-sourced contracts – Sulemana Braimah

Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, has urged Ghanaians to critically examine the Roads Ministry’s 81 sole-sourced contracts, which Sammy Gyamfi recently defended.

Gyamfi, who serves as CEO of GoldBod, explained that the contracts were part of the NDC’s Big Push agenda and justified by urgency, despite previous criticisms of sole-sourcing while in opposition.

“In opposition, we never said sole-sourcing was unlawful. We spoke against unjustified use and abuse of it,” Gyamfi stated.

Braimah, however, called for consistency. “When the same action previously criticized as an avenue for corruption is now defended as urgent, it raises questions about standards,” he said.

The MFWA director also highlighted the Fourth Estate investigation, which detailed the contracts and suggested the need for public oversight.

Braimah urged citizens to engage with the facts directly. “We will put contract prices out. Citizens should determine for themselves if the costs, like GHC146 million for 9km of road, are fair,” he said.

He concluded with a broader call for accountability.

“Standards must apply equally, irrespective of who benefits or which party is in power,” Braimah said, emphasizing that transparency in government contracting is essential for public trust.
