Parliament has approved the Value for Money Office Bill 2026, paving the way for a new independent body to oversee public spending and procurement.
The bill, introduced by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, is aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability in government expenditure.
Speaking in Parliament, he said the move responds to persistent issues such as inflated contracts, abandoned projects, and wasteful spending. “This Bill… ensures every cedi delivers maximum benefit,” he noted.
The new office will assess value for money, issue mandatory clearance for major contracts, monitor compliance, and enforce sanctions where necessary, with the goal of strengthening public financial management and ensuring projects deliver real outcomes.
