Ghana’s Black Starlets will face Uganda in a playoff match to determine who qualifies for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under-17 World Cup, after losing a drawing of lots to Algeria at the 2026 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The match carries an unusual subplot. Uganda are coached by Laryea Kingston, a former Ghana international who previously served as head coach of the Black Starlets before taking charge of the Ugandan side, setting up a deeply personal contest between the tactician and his former team.
Ghana finished Group D with four points after beating South Africa 3-1 in their final group game. Algeria also collected four points despite a 2-1 loss to Senegal, who topped the group and progressed directly to the quarterfinals.
With both Ghana and Algeria level on points, goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference, and their earlier group meeting having ended 2-2, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations turned to a drawing of lots in Rabat. Algeria came out of the draw and secured automatic World Cup qualification alongside a quarterfinal berth.
Ghana now enter the playoff stage as their only remaining route to the global tournament. A win over Kingston’s Uganda side would earn the Black Starlets a place at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and send the former coach out of contention in the same fixture.
The stakes could not be higher for either nation.
