You cannot fight water with poor planning – NPP Communicator

Deputy National Communications Director of the NPP, Alhaji Kamal-Deen Abdulai, says Ghana’s flood disasters are largely a consequence of poor planning and a failure to respect the power of nature.

During an appearance on TV3’s New Day, he argued that water will always reclaim its natural path when developments block drainage channels.

“Water is very revengeful. Water is strong. Water doesn’t joke where this is my passage,” he said.

Kamal-Deen noted that many people underestimate the force of water, yet every flood season demonstrates the consequences of obstructing waterways or failing to build adequate drainage systems.

According to him, once water is denied its natural route, it will create a new one, often causing destruction along the way.

“Just pour water down and it struggles to get its route. You want to stop it, it forces its way out,” he stated.

He argued that flooding should not be viewed solely as a weather problem but also as evidence of planning failures by engineers, developers, local authorities and policymakers.

Kamal-Deen called for better urban planning, stronger enforcement of building regulations and long-term infrastructure development, saying Ghana must “rewrite our story” if it wants to reduce the impact of floods on lives and property.
