Co-hosts Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in a dramatic Group A opener at Estadio Azteca.
Backed by 80,824 supporters in Mexico City, El Tri produced a strong performance to secure all three points, although the match was overshadowed by disciplinary issues that resulted in three red cards.
Mexico dominated much of the contest and capitalised on South Africa’s numerical disadvantage, with the visitors eventually finishing the match with nine players.
South Africa’s problems deepened when veteran midfielder Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct, while Mexico captain César Montes also received a red card late in stoppage time.
The victory moves Mexico to the top of Group A and gives head coach Javier Aguirre an ideal start as the hosts seek to progress beyond the opening stage of the tournament.
