Concerns Grow Over Rising Begging at Accra International Airport

Concerns are mounting among sections of the Ghanaian public over what they describe as a growing culture of begging at Accra International Airport, a development they fear could tarnish the country’s international image.

Frequent users of the airport have taken to social media to express frustration over what they claim has become a widespread practice of individuals soliciting money, commonly referred to as “nokofio,” from passengers and visitors.

According to several posts circulating online, the phenomenon is no longer isolated but has become increasingly common across different sections of the airport, with some travellers alleging that requests for money have become a routine experience.

Critics argue that the trend is creating an uncomfortable environment for both local and international travellers and risks undermining Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming destination and a gateway to West Africa.

Many social media users have called on airport authorities and relevant state agencies to investigate the situation and implement measures to address the growing concern before it escalates further.

They contend that if left unchecked, the practice could negatively affect the country’s global standing, particularly as Ghana continues to market itself as a preferred destination for tourism, business and international investment.
