Zero VGMA Nominations: Antwi Himighty Cries Foul

Antwi Himighty of the music group Antwi Ne Antwi has expressed disappointment over what he describes as the group’s failure to receive any nomination at the Ghana Music Awards despite producing several popular songs in the early 2000s.

Speaking on Asempa FM, he said the group enjoyed the massive public support and commercial success, yet their contributions were never recognized by the award scheme.

“The feeling was great when people enjoyed most of our music, but we were never nominated for the Ghana Music Awards after all the popular songs. They didn’t even mention our names,” he said.

According to him, the nomination process in the early years differed from what exists today, where artistes and management teams submit entries for consideration.

“It is recently that people file for forms, but initially they went to Kantamanto to find out the songs that were making a lot of sales in the market before they nominated artistes,” he claimed.

Antwi Himighty revealed that at one point, there were discussions suggesting the group would receive recognition, but nothing materialized.

“I remember that Fred Nii Armah discussed with us that they would nominate us, but nothing came out of it,” he stated.

He cited some of the group’s biggest songs, including ‘Uncle Ebo’ and ‘Sakina’, as examples of records that enjoyed widespread popularity but failed to attract nominations or awards.

“Our song ‘Uncle Ebo’ was a big hit in 2003, but we did not even win an award for it. ‘Sakina’ too was released in 2001, but it also did not receive any awards,” he said.

Despite the disappointment, Antwi Himighty said the appreciation shown by fans over the years remains the group’s greatest source of satisfaction.

“But the mere fact that people enjoyed our music makes us happy,” he added.
