Families travelled from Nkonya to Alavanyo to watch match together – Hohoe MP

The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has said Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama created moments of unity in some communities within his constituency.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, the MP recounted how residents from Alavanyo and Nkunya gathered at a viewing centre to watch the Black Stars’ opening World Cup match.

According to him, the occasion brought together people who had not interacted for years because of longstanding tensions between the two communities.

“In my constituency, one of the viewing centres was sited in Alavanyo. Because of the issues between Alavanyo and Nkunya over the years, some families did not see each other,” he said.

He noted that the football match changed the atmosphere for a few hours as residents crossed community lines to watch the game together.

“At around 11 o’clock, we had families moving from Nkunya to Alavanyo to watch the match,” he stated.

The Black Stars secured a 1-0 victory over Panama thanks to a late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi in stoppage time, earning Ghana three points in their opening Group L fixture.

Tsekpo said the scenes witnessed in his constituency showed how football can create opportunities for social interaction and togetherness among residents.
