Add some flesh to the committee – Henry Quartey advises President Mahama on flood response team

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey has called on President John Dramani Mahama to review the composition of the committee established to address flooding, saying it should include additional ministers and technical experts.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 1, following the June 29 floods, Quartey said the committee would benefit from broader representation.

“I think issues about flooding, you cannot form a committee of this nature without the Minister of the Interior. You cannot form a committee of this nature without the Minister for Finance,” he said.

He also proposed the inclusion of technical professionals whose expertise relates directly to flood management and urban planning.

“You need a geologist. You need a hydrogeologist. You need a spatial planner. These people should be on the committee so that they can provide the technical advice, and then the politicians can drive the policy,” he stated.

Quartey said the current members are accomplished professionals but maintained that expanding the committee’s expertise would improve its ability to develop long-term solutions to Ghana’s flooding challenges.

“With the greatest respect, the President may have to look at it again and add some flesh to the committee so they will be able to perform their duties,” he added.
