IMANI Vice President Kofi Bentil believes demolishing buildings on waterways without restoring the affected land will not resolve Ghana’s flooding challenges.
He said development permanently changes the characteristics of land, making additional technical work necessary.
“For me, when people talk about, ‘We are going to break down houses,’ it is not a solution. We’ve been doing that all this time. It’s never worked,” he said this on KeyPoints on TV3.
Bentil explained that once land has been built on, simply removing structures does not restore its original condition.
“When they built in those areas, they changed the nature of the space. They’ve changed the nature of the soil. If you break the building down, the soil has changed already.”
He added, “Beyond the demolition, there has to be a reclamation of the land. Technically sound solutions.”
