Dredging the Odaw alone will not end flooding – Kofi Bentil

IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has stated that Ghana’s flood management efforts should focus on technically sound solutions rather than relying mainly on dredging.

He said he has long questioned the effectiveness of dredging the Odaw River as a long-term solution.

“The second reason is a failure or refusal to apply technically sound solutions,” he said.

Bentil recalled that he studied the issue years ago while working near the Odaw.

“I’ve been saying since then that this dredging will never work,” Speaking on KeyPoints on TV3.

He explained that rivers naturally deposit silt as they approach the sea, making repeated dredging ineffective if the underlying environmental conditions remain unchanged.

“Today, if you dredge the Odaw, it will silt the next season. As long as there is environmental degradation and silting, the silt will continue to be carried into the river.”
