Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has explained his decision to join German club FC Köln following the expiration of his contract with French side AJ Auxerre.
The 27-year-old, who turns 28 in seven days, signed a two-year contract with the Bundesliga outfit during the summer transfer window.
The move brings an end to a successful spell in France, where the Black Stars left-back made more than 100 appearances for Auxerre, including 98 Ligue 1 matches.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Mensah revealed that although he had several offers after the World Cup, his discussions with FC Köln convinced him that the Bundesliga club was the right destination.
“After the World Cup, I had several options. But in the discussions with the FC officials, who went to great lengths to sign me, I had the best feeling from the start. Added to that is the sporting prospects the club outlined for me,” he said.
The Ghana international also expressed his excitement about playing in front of the club’s passionate supporters and vowed to give everything for his new team.
“And of course, I’ve already heard a lot about the city and the extraordinary support of the FC fans, which I’m really looking forward to. Just like I did for Ghana and my previous clubs, I will give my all for FC so that the club achieves its goals and we are successful as a team,” he added.
