A 26-year-old junior doctor has been charged with manslaughter after a 63-year-old man died following an alleged confrontation outside a home in Perth, Australia.
Christian Jack Joseph was arrested after police alleged he pinned the older man to the ground and placed him in a chokehold during the incident at South Terrace.
According to reports, Joseph and a friend had returned from a night out in Fremantle when they allegedly found the man looking through a window of the property.
Police allege the pair confronted and chased the man before Joseph restrained him. When the man became unconscious, Joseph reportedly performed CPR and asked his friend to call emergency services.
The 63-year-old was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he later died.
Joseph, who works as a junior doctor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court wearing a forensic jumpsuit.
His lawyer told the court that Joseph acted in self-defence, saying he was intimidated by the man’s behaviour and that the incident was out of character.
Prosecutors said investigations were ongoing, including reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.
The magistrate denied bail due to the seriousness of the charge and refused a request to suppress Joseph’s name.
Joseph is scheduled to appear in court again on August 5.
