Those cheering today may be victims tomorrow – Manasseh warns over false news convictions

Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has raised concerns about what he describes as inconsistencies in the application of laws on false news and public statements following the conviction of TikToker Camilla Alhassan.

The investigative journalist said while Camilla’s comments about President John Dramani Mahama were unacceptable, he was concerned about how similar legal standards are applied to different people.

His comments followed Camilla’s one-year prison sentence after she was convicted of offensive conduct and publishing false news against the president.

Manasseh argued that some statements made by influential individuals have also had the potential to create public concern but have not resulted in criminal prosecution.

He pointed to a previous case involving a blogger who was jailed over similar claims, while contrasting it with comments by a lawmaker that he said were handled differently.

“An obscure blogger had earlier been jailed for similar claims. However, the MP was not arrested. The Central Bank issued only a statement saying his statement was false,” he said.

He argued that the identity and position of people making statements should not determine whether legal action is taken.

Manasseh said he was disappointed with the direction he believes the justice system is taking, particularly regarding cases involving speech and public criticism.

“It is unfortunate that some judges are capitulating to frivolous charges and passing these sentences,” he stated.

He added that criminalising every offensive or irresponsible statement could create broader problems.

“If such foolishness were to be criminalised, we wouldn’t have enough prisons to contain people,” he wrote.

Manasseh concluded by warning that decisions affecting free expression can eventually affect people across different political and social groups.

“Those cheering today may be victims tomorrow,” he said.
