Private legal practitioner Godlove Adjei Tenkorang has called on the Attorney General to ensure that the fight against illegal mining is applied fairly by prosecuting all persons implicated in galamsey activities rather than focusing solely on Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on Angel FM, Kumasi, Lawyer Tenkorang said the credibility of the government’s anti-galamsey campaign would depend on whether the law is enforced without fear or favour.
“If they want the confidence of the people that they are willing to make sure the law rules and the right things are done, they should make sure that the other people, including the MCEs in the NDC party who have already received petitions, also have their cases heard,” he said.
According to him, limiting prosecutions to a few high-profile individuals could create the impression of selective justice and weaken public confidence in the legal process.
He urged investigators and prosecutors to pursue every petition and allegation of illegal mining to its logical conclusion, regardless of the political affiliation or public status of those involved.
“Those who are guilty should be rightly dealt with,” he stated.
Lawyer Tenkorang maintained that only an impartial application of the law would convince Ghanaians that the fight against illegal mining is driven by justice rather than politics.
