Why I created Twi Pop genre – D-Cryme finally explains

Ghanaian rapper D-Cryme has explained that the creation of Twi Pop was driven by his desire to blend Ghana’s local identity with global music influences and create a sound that could represent the country internationally.

According to the rapper, the name “Twi Pop” was carefully chosen to reflect the combination of Ghanaian language and foreign musical styles.

“The first thing about Twi Pop is that Twi represents our vernacular and the pop is representing the foreign style,” D-Cryme explained on Joy Prime.

He said although he could have chosen a name in English that would have been easier for people around the world to understand, he wanted the name itself to introduce listeners to Ghana.

“I could have chosen an easy name which is English, but whoever is hearing me would always say, ‘What is this?’ People say it twice depending on where they are coming from. But me telling them alone that my genre is Twi Pop, that alone is me selling Ghana,” he said.

D-Cryme noted that language and culture have always played an important role in how countries identify themselves through music.

He referenced genres such as highlife and hiplife, explaining that some musical movements become strongly associated with the people who create and develop them.

“Whenever we say hiplife, we think of Grandpapa. Whenever we say highlife, we know it is from Ghana,” he said.

For him, Twi Pop was not about limiting music to one language but rather creating a platform where Ghanaian sounds could exist alongside international influences.

“Even though we have our native sound in music, music is a universal language, so you would want to infuse other styles and genres in there. That’s why I chose the pop,” he added.

D-Cryme said his aim was to create something that could be identified with Ghana while still appealing to audiences outside the country.

“It is not just about creating something for ourselves. Whatever we create, this talent is for the people, not for our own possession,” he said.
