President John Dramani Mahama has pledged Ghana’s full support for Jamaica’s planned petition to King Charles III on slavery, describing the Caribbean nation as a leading voice in the global campaign for historical justice.
Addressing Jamaica’s Parliament during his state visit on August 4, Mahama said Ghana stands firmly behind Jamaica’s efforts to seek justice over the legacy of slavery.
“I wish to also reiterate my message to the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Jamaica, Dr. Andrew Holness, yesterday, that Ghana fully supports the petition on slavery Jamaica proposes to soon submit to King Charles III,” he said.
Mahama praised Jamaica for its long-standing commitment to the reparations movement.
“Jamaica has provided principled leadership on this important issue for many years,” he stated.
The President said Ghana and Jamaica are working together to ensure that descendants of enslaved Africans are not forgotten.
“Together, our two nations are ensuring that the descendants of those who suffered history’s greatest injustice are neither forgotten nor denied a voice in shaping a fairer world,” he added.
Mahama is in Jamaica on a state visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries and advancing shared priorities, including reparations, trade and cultural ties.
