WAFCON 2026: Morocco vs Algeria third-place match preview

Hosts Morocco and Algeria will face off in the third-place play-off of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 at the Rabat Olympic Stadium on Saturday, August 15.

The match will be the first WAFCON medal clash between two North African teams and the first time teams from the same region have met in a third-place play-off.

Morocco will be hoping to secure a top-three finish on home soil after losing their semi-final to Cameroon on penalties following a goalless draw.

A victory would see Morocco finish among the top three for the third consecutive WAFCON, having finished runners-up in 2022 and 2024. They would also become the first host nation since South Africa in 2010 to win the third-place play-off.

Morocco defeated Algeria 1-0 in the group stage earlier in the tournament, with Sanaa Mssoudy scoring the only goal in the 84th minute.

Algeria, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals for the first time but were beaten 3-1 by debutants Malawi.

Regardless of the result, Algeria will record their best-ever finish at a WAFCON finals.

The match will also mark the second meeting between the two neighbours at this tournament. Morocco will be seeking to beat the same opponent twice at a single WAFCON edition for the first time.

Morocco have won their previous two meetings with North African opposition at the tournament, while Algeria have yet to score against a North African opponent at WAFCON.

The third-place play-off has produced several memorable encounters over the years, including Ghana’s 6-3 victory over Zimbabwe in 2000. Ghana also hold the record for the most third-place finishes, having won all four of their previous play-offs.

For Morocco and Algeria, however, Saturday’s encounter presents an opportunity to end their campaigns on a high and claim a historic bronze medal.
