Ghanaian teen steals spotlight in Belgian Jupiler Pro League

Ghanaian forward Jerry Afriyie made an impressive start to life at KRC Genk by providing an assist on his debut in a 4-4 draw with Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Saturday.

The 19-year-old recently joined the Belgian club and came off the bench in the second half.

Afriyie entered the game in the 69th minute and quickly made an impact. He provided the final pass for Aaron Bibout to score Genk’s fourth goal.

Royal Antwerp took the lead in the 16th minute through Anthony Valencia before Josué Kongolo equalised for Genk.

Genk then took control after the break. Rafiu Durosinmi and Ayumu Yokoyama scored in quick succession to put the visitors 3-1 ahead.

Afriyie later played a key role in Genk’s fourth goal as Bibout extended their lead.

However, Antwerp staged a late comeback. Eran Tuypens reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining before Michael Frey scored twice in two minutes to complete the comeback.

The result denied Genk an important away win, but Afriyie’s performance will give the Ghanaian plenty of confidence after his first competitive appearance for the club.
