Lt Col Jonny Thompson, the senior equerry to King Charles III and Queen Camilla, will leave the Royal Household and the British Army at the end of the year to pursue a career in the private sector.
Thompson, who has served in the British Army for nearly 22 years, became senior equerry in October 2023, effectively serving as the King’s right-hand man. He has remained closely involved with the King and Queen, including accompanying them on their state visit to the US in April 2026.
Buckingham Palace said Charles and Camilla were aware of his plans and were “most grateful to Jonny for his support over the past seven years”.
Thompson joined the Army in 2005 and served in Iraq and Afghanistan before becoming one of Queen Elizabeth II’s senior bodyguards. He later became equerry to Charles and Camilla in 2019, when they were Prince and Princess of Wales.
His departure follows the planned exit of other senior members of the King’s household, including private secretary Sir Clive Alderton and long-serving butler Bernie Flannery.
