The Black Maidens will face Burkina Faso in their opening WAFU B U17 Girls Cup match tomorrow, with the head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa saying the main aim is to build a strong team for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Speaking at a press conference, the coach said the tournament will give the team a chance to assess and prepare the players for the World Cup.
“We are here to compete for the World Cup… we are going to use this tournament to assess our players, to prepare them and go into the World Cup that will give us a good result.”
Despite the focus on development, the coach made it clear that Ghana are in Yamoussoukro to compete.
“We are here for business,” he said.
“We are here to compete and compete with the best teams like Nigeria and all other groups here.”
He also stressed the need for a strong squad, saying every area of the team has been improved.
“If you want to compete with the best, you have to strengthen your team,” he explained.
The coach also pointed to the confidence that comes with being defending champions.
“Everything is high because we are defending champions. The last one that we played in Ghana we won it right, so the spirit is already high, so we are here to defend it.”
