An X user, Chidinma Louisa Akubueze, has shared how her husband’s cousin threatened to end his marriage after his wife’s family demanded an additional ₦300,000 during a bride price ceremony in Mbaise.
According to Akubueze, the man had already paid ₦2 million and settled everything on the original bride price list, which ran from page one to page six.
The family, however, allegedly produced another list and demanded an extra ₦300,000.
The man reportedly explained that he had not budgeted for the additional amount and pleaded with the family to allow him to return to Warri, hustle for the money and send it later.
Akubueze said relatives and other people present spent about two hours, from 2pm to 4pm, pleading with the kinsmen to accept his explanation, but they allegedly refused.
Their position, according to her, was that he had to pay the ₦300,000 that day or leave.
She said the situation was made more difficult by the fact that the couple already had three children together.
After the pleas failed, the man reportedly walked towards his vehicle and told his wife: “As you see me so, na go I dey. If I enter that bus and you no follow me, marriage don end. I no dey come back here.”
Akubueze said the bride was left watching as her husband headed towards the vehicle, putting the marriage in an unexpected crisis over the additional demand.
