Why some Ghanaian men are reaching their 30s and still afraid to marry

Turning 30 does not automatically mean a man is ready to marry. For some men, the issue is not that they do not want marriage.

They are simply looking at the financial and family responsibilities that come with it and wondering whether they can handle them.

Here are some reasons why some men are delaying marriage:

The cost of setting up a home

Rent, furniture, appliances, utilities and other household expenses can require a lot of money. Some men do not want to enter marriage and immediately struggle to provide the basics.

Rent is already a major expense

A man who is struggling to pay his own rent may not feel ready to take on the cost of maintaining a home for a wife and children.

Family responsibilities come first

Some men are already supporting parents, siblings or other relatives. Marriage can feel difficult when a large part of their income is already committed elsewhere.

Multiple jobs can leave little room for family life

Some men are working several jobs or running side businesses just to stay financially stable. They may worry about adding marriage and children to an already demanding routine.

Bride price and marriage expenses

Traditional marriage expenses, engagement ceremonies and other requirements can make marriage feel financially out of reach for men who are not earning enough.

Expectations have changed

Some men feel they are expected to provide housing, transportation, food, bills and other needs while also meeting their partner’s expectations for a certain lifestyle.

They are afraid of becoming financially trapped

A man may worry that marriage will leave him with little money for emergencies, investments or personal development.

They have seen marriages fail

Watching friends or relatives go through difficult marriages or expensive divorces can make some men more cautious about entering marriage themselves.

They want financial stability first

Some men would rather build savings, buy property, develop a business or establish their careers before taking on the responsibilities of marriage.

They do not want to marry simply because they have reached a certain age

Being 30, 35 or even older does not automatically mean someone has found the right person or is financially prepared. Some men would rather wait than enter marriage because of pressure from family or society.
