Solomon Owusu to join October 2 Democracy in Progress demonstration

United Party (UP) Director of Communications Solomon Owusu has announced his support for the Democracy in Progress demonstration scheduled for October 2, 2026, saying he will personally take part in the protest.

The demonstration is being organised as a peaceful call for greater accountability and respect for state institutions. The organisers have described it as a citizens’ accountability march under the theme, “Democracy at work: Accountability is not persecution.”

Owusu said he would be at the demonstration himself and urged Ghanaians to support the call.

“On the 2nd of October, 2026, the Democracy in Progress civil society will be embarking on a demonstration, a peaceful one, to ensure and also to call on this government that you must, as a matter of urgency, make sure that your ORAL works,” he said on JoyNews.

He said the demonstration should also be used to encourage state institutions and demonstrate that Ghana’s democracy remains active while recognising that there is still room for improvement.

“You must encourage them. You must also let the world understand that our democracy, as a matter of fact, is in progress. We are doing very well. And there is also more room for improvement,” he said.

Owusu contrasted the planned demonstration with the New Patriotic Party’s August 6 protest, which was held under the theme “Democracy Under Attack.”

The Democracy in Progress march is expected to take place in Accra, with participants scheduled to converge at Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
