Haruna Iddrisu urges teacher unions to call off strike, pledges new grades by October 30

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed to the three teacher unions to call off their nationwide strike, assuring them that the government will place all promoted teachers on their new grades by October 30, 2026.

He gave the assurance after meeting the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) on Friday, October 2.

Mr Iddrisu said the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department was validating the records of about 51,000 teachers to facilitate payment of promotion arrears.

Those whose records have been validated will be included in a supplementary payment schedule, while others will receive their new grades and related payments through their October salaries.

“The government team makes a commitment to the teacher union and to all teachers that we will honour our commitment of the new grades for all promoted teachers on or before 30th October,” he said.

He also assured the unions that government would address their other concerns, including negotiations on expired conditions of service and the proposed 20 per cent deprived-area allowance.

Mr Iddrisu urged the unions to reciprocate the government’s commitment by ending the strike from Monday to allow academic activities to resume in public schools.
