U17 Colts Championship: Western Region beat Prempeh Elite Academy on penalties to reach final

Western Region secured a place in the final of the 2026 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship after beating Prempeh Elite Academy on penalties at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence on Saturday, October 10.

The first semi-final ended in a 1-1 draw after 80 minutes, forcing both teams to decide the winner through a penalty shootout.

Western Region took the lead through Emmanuel Nyankumi in the 44th minute and looked set to win the match. However, Prempeh Elite Academy fought back, with Thomas Asante scoring two minutes before the end of normal time to make it 1-1.

Neither team could find a winning goal, so the match went to penalties. Western Region kept their cool to win the shootout 4-2 and book their place in Sunday’s final.

The victory was an important achievement for Western Region, who showed discipline against one of the tournament’s strongest attacking teams.

They will play in the final on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the same venue. Their opponents will be either Brong Ahafo or Greater Accra, who will meet in the second semi-final.

The defeat ends Prempeh Elite Academy’s run in the competition. They will now compete for third place after narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

The KGL Foundation sponsors the Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship, which is part of the Ghana Football Association’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS). The programme aims to identify, develop and support young Ghanaian football talents.

The competition gives promising under-17 players a chance to show their skills, improve their understanding of the game and gain valuable experience by playing against some of the country’s best young talents.
