Ghanaian-British singer Stephanie Benson has revealed that she was diagnosed with cancer in both her breast and womb at the age of 48, urging women to prioritise regular health check-ups and early detection.
Speaking about her experience on United Showbiz on UTV, monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Benson said she discovered the cancers after visiting an aunt who was hospitalised with stomach cancer. During the visit, doctors detected cancer cells in her womb and breast, prompting her to undergo surgery to remove both.
“I was diagnosed at 48. My mother, aunt, and grandmother died of breast cancer at the age of 48,” she said, recounting her family’s history with the disease.
Benson explained that doctors detected the cancers at an early stage, which made timely intervention possible.
“It was at its early stages. So detecting it at early stages helps so you do something about it,” she stated.
She said she underwent breast removal surgery first but experienced complications before eventually recovering. She later underwent surgery to remove her womb.
Reflecting on the importance of screening, Benson stressed that breast cancer can occur without obvious warning signs and that people may not necessarily feel sick before receiving a diagnosis.
“Breast cancer can happen at any time. It does not give any notice. People do not necessarily get sick first before they are diagnosed,” she said.
She encouraged women to check their breasts regularly for unusual lumps or changes and seek medical attention when they notice anything abnormal.
