NPP communicator Awal Mohammed has questioned President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), citing her previous role as a spokesperson for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Reacting to the appointment on social media, Awal expressed concern over the decision, writing: “President Mahama appoints NDC’s 2024 Manifesto Spokesperson on Governance as Deputy Electoral Commissioner. Oh Ghana, how did we get here?”
President Mahama appointed Agbenyo alongside Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, a lawyer and former Electoral Commission Director of Finance, as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC. The two were sworn into office on Monday, October 12, 2026.
Agbenyo previously served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service and has worked in technical and vocational education, skills development and gender transformation. Asamoah, meanwhile, brings previous experience in the EC’s finance, audit and training departments.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Mahama urged the new officials to demonstrate impartiality and protect the right of Ghanaians to choose their leaders freely.
“So let me state clearly. Your duty is to the Republic of Ghana and its people. You must discharge your responsibilities without favour towards any political party, any candidate or government,” he said.
He added that the authority of their offices must be exercised with “fairness, restraint and fidelity to the law.”
