Newly Sworn-in Deputy EC Chairperson haunted by her past

Ms Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s political past could haunt her after her appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), as her previous role as an NDC manifesto spokesperson and a past statement about voting against the NPP government drew attention.

President John Dramani Mahama swore in Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Jubilee House.

The two appointments fill vacancies created by the departure of former Deputy Chairpersons Dr Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey.

But Agbenyo’s previous political involvement with the governing National Democratic Congress(NDC) has put her in the spotlight and under scrutiny.

On August 24, 2024, the NDC announced her as one of its sectoral spokespersons for its 2024 election manifesto. She was listed under the governance sector alongside Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Sylvester Mensah, with a mandate to speak on issues relating to the party’s manifesto.

That official record establishes her involvement in the NDC’s political communication ahead of the 2024 general election.

Another statement she made in the build-up to the 2024 elections has also attracted attention. In the statement, she wrote:

“I will be voting against a government that ridiculed the pains of the people.

“Imposing a nuisance levy on citizens is not a thing to celebrate.

“Governance is no joke, citizens are not your enemies.”

At her swearing-in, President Mahama emphasised that expectation, telling the new deputies: “You must discharge your responsibilities without favour towards any political party, any candidate or government.”

He also said they must exercise the authority of their offices with “fairness, restraint and fidelity to the law.”
