P.V. Jantuah condemns Mahama over Deputy EC appointments

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), P.V. Jantuah Boateng Dadson has condemned the decision to appoint a politically tainted individual as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

According to him, a government that preached reset cannot go ahead and do the same things they preached against in opposition.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Abusua FM, P.V. Jantuah indicated that President John Dramani Mahama while in opposition spoke vehemently against such appointments and so for him to turn around to do same is very unfortunate.

“On the grounds of principle, I disagree with this appointment. While in opposition, we condemned such appointments. I thought our reset meant changing the way things are done so that Ghanaians will see that there is a difference between the NPP and the NDC.

But if we are going to do the same things we spoke against then personally I don’t support that,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Emelia Afi Agbenyo, Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, a former Director of  Finance at the Electoral Commission (EC), as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission.

Dr Asamoah, a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), previously held several senior positions at the EC, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.

Their appointments follow changes in the commission’s senior leadership, including the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs, effective July 31, 2026, and the retirement of Samuel Tettey, the former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.

The appointments are expected to fill the vacancies created by the departures and strengthen the commission’s leadership as it carries out its electoral responsibilities.

However, the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo has faced criticism, considering the fact that she’s been at the forefront of NDC politics.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected her appointment and has called for her removal from the office she is now occupying.
