Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has described President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) as a betrayal of public trust and a departure from the principles on which the government campaigned.
Mr Hosi said the decision contradicted the reset agenda that attracted voters to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“This decision is depressing and a breach of his own ideals and professions,” he said.
“Felix, we voted for a reset. We didn’t vote for equalisation. We didn’t vote for tilting.”
Hosi stressed that Agbenyo’s competence was not the issue, arguing that the appointment raised broader questions about governance and the government’s commitment to strengthening independent state institutions.
“The woman’s competence is not the problem because that’s not been the matter,” he said.
He cited the government’s own promises to tackle corruption, nepotism and favouritism, and to restore public trust in state institutions, arguing that the appointment did not reflect those commitments.
Hosi urged the government to reconsider its approach, warning that it risked wasting the political capital Ghanaians had given it.
“Don’t waste the political capital that Ghanaians have graced you with. We are eroding it one by one,” he said.
