An American, Normand Tousignant has become a first-time grandfather at 92 years and 24 days, earning recognition from Guinness World Records as the oldest man to achieve the milestone.
The American met his granddaughter, Madison, on September 22, 2022, the day she was born to his only child, Kerry.
Kerry said the arrival of Madison had revitalised her father’s life and brought the family closer together. The record was celebrated at Tousignant’s 96th birthday party in August, when he unveiled his certificate alongside his granddaughter.
Guinness World Records said he surpassed Australian Charles Smith, who previously held the record after becoming a first-time grandfather at 91 years and 209 days.
Tousignant, a retired clinical psychologist, grew up in Gardner, Massachusetts, as one of 17 children. He is now the only surviving sibling and has 56 nieces and nephews.
Despite being hard of hearing, he shares a close bond with Madison, playing with her at playgrounds, pretending to steal her French fries and enjoying mini doughnuts together. His daughter said he even climbed a slide to play with her.
The family later moved from Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina, to be closer to Tousignant and his wife, Mary Louise.
Kerry said they applied for the record after a cousin shared a newspaper article about the previous record holder.
Although the family initially hesitated because her father prefers privacy, they eventually submitted an application and received the news shortly before his 96th birthday.
