The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed schools to stop teachers and headteachers from asking Senior High School (SHS) students to perform household chores at their bungalows.
GES Director-General Professor Ernest Kofi Davis said the Service would write to schools by Thursday, October 22, 2026, to remind staff that the practice violates the GES Code of Conduct.
Speaking to reporters, he cited Section 3.7(v) of the code, which states that students should not be asked to perform household chores.
“We are going to write to schools to make sure that it doesn’t happen because in our Code of Conduct, Section 3.7(v), it is written that the students are not expected to be asked to engage in household chores,” he said.
Professor Davis added that regional directors would be expected to remind teachers and other staff of the rule and ensure they complied with it.
“By Thursday, I expect the news to get to all regional directors to remind our staff to apprise themselves with the Code of Conduct and cease inviting students to schools to do household chores because the Code of Conduct does not permit that,” he stated.
His comments come amid public concern over allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, which has renewed calls for an end to students performing domestic duties at teachers’ and headteachers’ residences.
When asked why the practice had continued despite the existing rule, Professor Davis said the Service would remind staff of the code and stressed that the practice was not acceptable.
