They trivialised it – Manasseh faults handling of Obuasi SHS allegations

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has questioned why the Obuasi Director of Education failed to investigate complaints from three girls who allegedly reported sexual abuse by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School in March 2026.

According to Manasseh, the director admitted during a conversation with him that five girls had visited his office in March, with three submitting written complaints against the headmaster.

However, the director reportedly said no investigation was conducted because he fell ill and was away from the office for an extended period.

“Three of them came with written complaints of how the headmaster sexually abused them,” Manasseh recounted, before raising a direct question about the director’s response: “The question is, did you investigate?”

He said the director’s answer was no. Manasseh also questioned the composition and handling of a committee that was formed after further allegations emerged in June and an alleged rape incident was reported in July.

According to the journalist, some of the officials who had failed to act on the earlier complaints later sat on the committee that examined the allegations against the headmaster.

He criticised the committee’s handling of the matter, claiming that its proceedings downplayed the allegations and that the report largely cleared the headmaster.

Manasseh further recalled that, during the proceedings, one girl reportedly said the headmaster had kissed her on the cheek, while another alleged that he had used a massage machine on her thigh.

He said someone in the gathering responded by suggesting that the headmaster had tickled the student, prompting laughter.

“And then somebody within the crowd said, ‘And then he, like, he tickled,’ and then everybody burst out laughing. Publicly,” Manasseh said.

The journalist criticised the response to the girls’ accounts, saying the officials had trivialised the allegations instead of treating them with the seriousness they deserved.

“So these directors cheapened the issue and they trivialised it,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on October 24, 2026.

Manasseh’s concerns centre on why the complaints reportedly submitted in March were not investigated and whether the subsequent committee handled the allegations appropriately.
