Marriage is not conspiracy – Samson Lardy challenges evidence against Adu-Boahene’s wife

Newsfile host Samson Lardy Anyenini has challenged the prosecution’s evidence against Angel Jin, the wife of former National Signals Bureau Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahene, saying her marriage to the accused does not establish criminal involvement.

Anyenini said the defence had questioned whether the corporate relationships and financial transactions cited by the prosecution were enough to prove that Jin knowingly participated in the alleged offences.

He made the point while examining the defence’s arguments in its 142-page submission of no case to answer, which also challenges the prosecution’s claims about luxury houses, vehicles and other properties allegedly acquired with stolen funds.

“Marriage is not conspiracy. Directorship is not proof of criminal intent,” Anyenini said.

He added that the prosecution must provide evidence establishing that Jin knowingly took part in the alleged crimes rather than rely on her relationship with Adu-Boahene or her position in a company.

Anyenini also questioned whether the state had established that the properties highlighted by the Attorney-General were acquired with the allegedly stolen money.

“Owning expensive property may attract the attention of law enforcement, but it does not without more prove that stolen money paid for those properties,” he said.

He stressed that the prosecution must establish the criminal responsibility of each accused person individually.

“I equally defend the accused person’s right to challenge the allegations and insist that the state meet its burden,” he said.
