Court jails Liberian for 10 years, defers American girlfriend’s sentence pending pregnancy test

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 25-year-old Liberian graphic designer Daniel Ireland to 10 years in prison with hard labour for robbing a Bolt driver.

His 18-year-old American fiancée, Skylah Leeann Marine Travis, also admitted to the crime, but her sentencing was deferred pending a pregnancy test.

She will return to court on 20 January 2025 for sentencing.

The couple attacked the driver on 7 January 2025, stabbing him multiple times to steal his Toyota Corolla, two phones, and cash worth over GH¢171,000. The driver, who sustained severe injuries, was hospitalised but later discharged.

The police arrested Ireland and Travis two days after the incident and recovered the stolen vehicle. The court also ordered them to pay GH¢6,000 each as compensation to the victim and return the stolen car.

The judge urged the convicts to seek rehabilitation after serving their sentences to rebuild their lives.
