140mm rainfall and human activity contributed to June 29 Accra floods – President Mahama reveals

President John Dramani Mahama has reacted to the flooding that affected parts of Accra on June 29, 2026, saying the situation was influenced by heavy rainfall and human activity.

He said, “The amount of rainfall recorded today is among the highest experienced in several years.

“Preliminary data indicates that approximately 140 millimetres of rain fell on Accra. By comparison, the highest single-day rainfall recorded last year was about 56 millimetres.”

He added that weather patterns played a role in the situation. “That aspect of the problem is beyond our control because it is driven by changing climatic conditions,” he said.

President Mahama also pointed to human behaviour as part of the challenge. “There is the issue of human behaviour,” he stated.

He explained that construction in waterways contributes to flooding risks, noting, “Whenever government begins removing structures built in waterways, some people accuse us of being inhumane. Yet when disasters such as today’s flooding occur, the consequences affect everyone.”

He added that, “The irresponsible actions of a few individuals end up putting entire communities at risk.”
